American Airlines Group Inc. announced a $1 billion investment to extend Concourse D at Miami International Airport, adding 17 new gates that will accommodate larger aircraft, eliminate outside boarding, and provide direct access to customs for international flights. The announcement was made on February 25, 2026, and the project will create a three‑level concourse‑D extension that enhances both passenger flow and operational efficiency.

Groundbreaking for the expansion is scheduled for 2027, with completion expected in 2030. The project is part of a broader $12 billion modernization plan for Miami International Airport that also includes a new Concourse K and a Central Terminal redevelopment, positioning the airport as a world‑class hub for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Miami serves as American Airlines’ primary gateway to Latin America, accounting for more than 60 % of the airline’s traffic at the airport. The investment signals confidence in long‑term growth in the region and supports the airline’s premium revenue strategy, which includes new Flagship lounges and expanded Admirals Clubs. By improving the passenger experience and increasing gate capacity, the expansion strengthens American’s competitive position in a highly contested market.

Financially, American reported a GAAP net income of $590 million in Q4 2024, up from $19 million in Q4 2023, and full‑year 2024 revenue of $54.2 billion, slightly above the $53 billion of 2023. The airline has also achieved its $15 billion debt‑reduction goal ahead of schedule, although it has withdrawn its full‑year 2025 guidance amid macroeconomic headwinds. The capital‑expenditure decision demonstrates management’s confidence in future demand despite short‑term uncertainty.

"Miami is an essential hub and international gateway for American, and it's a key part of our history and our future. The brand‑new, reimagined D60 is a transformational project that will provide a much‑improved experience for our customers and our team. This investment — alongside new premium lounges and new routes — reflects our shared commitment with Miami‑Dade County and the airport to ensure Miami remains the preeminent U.S. gateway to Latin America," said Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines. "The D60 expansion is one of the most monumental customer service improvements within our unprecedented airport‑wide modernization plan, which will transform the passenger experience at MIA from the cabin to the curb over the next five years," added Miami‑Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. "American and Miami‑Dade have built a partnership across decades that intertwines our success and vitality. We share a vision and legacy that has elevated Miami into the leading global gateway it is today — and positions us for exciting growth ahead," said Juan Carlos Liscano, American’s VP of MIA Operations.
