American Airlines and Qantas received interim approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on April 1 2026, allowing the two carriers to maintain their joint business agreement on trans‑Pacific routes while the ACCC completes a detailed review of a five‑year extension.

The interim authorization keeps the airlines operating coordinated schedules, inventory sharing, revenue‑sharing, and cost‑reduction initiatives across routes linking Australia and New Zealand with the United States, Canada and Mexico, ensuring passengers retain seamless connectivity and the airlines preserve market access.

The alliance, originally approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation in November 2011, was re‑authorized for five years on March 25 2021. American and Qantas formally requested the current extension in November 2025, and the ACCC is expected to issue a final determination in June 2026.

By securing the interim approval, the carriers avoid service disruptions that could arise during the review period, protecting revenue streams and maintaining the competitive position of the alliance against other trans‑Pacific partnerships.

Management from both airlines emphasized the importance of the partnership. “The continued cooperation strengthens our network and delivers greater choice for customers,” said a spokesperson for American Airlines. “The interim approval allows us to keep operating without interruption while the ACCC completes its assessment.”
