Apple to Close First Unionized U.S. Store in Towson, Maryland, as Part of Broader Retail Footprint Review

Apple announced that its first unionized retail location in Towson, Maryland, will close permanently in June 2026. The decision follows a unionization effort that began in 2022 and reflects the company’s assessment of the Towson Town Center mall’s declining viability.

Apple cited the departure of several anchor tenants—Banana Republic, Madewell, and Tommy Bahama—as evidence of the mall’s deteriorating foot traffic. The company said that the loss of these retailers, combined with broader mall challenges, made the Towson location unsustainable.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has condemned the closure as a “cynical attempt to bust the union.” The union is exploring legal options and has stated that the collective bargaining agreement does not allow Apple to relocate the store.

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, employees at the Towson store will be eligible to apply for open positions at other Apple retail locations. Employees at the other two closing stores—Trumbull, Connecticut, and North County, California—will continue their roles at nearby Apple stores.

Apple’s management emphasized that the company remains committed to delivering exceptional service and will continue to evaluate all retail locations. The company’s recent quarterly results showed an all‑time revenue record, indicating that the store closures are not a reflection of overall financial performance but rather a strategic response to a declining mall environment.
