Amazon has broadened its Amazon Autos platform to carry vehicles from Chevrolet, Jeep, Kia, Mazda, and Subaru, bringing the total number of brands to five and expanding service coverage to more than 130 U.S. cities. The move follows the initial partnership with Hyundai that launched the program at the end of 2024.

Early sales data illustrate the program’s nascent stage: one dealer reported only one vehicle sale in the past month and a half, and Amazon has signed up hundreds of dealers who pay a fee to list inventory. Several dealers have expressed concerns about slow traction and logistical challenges, indicating that the fee structure and dealer experience are still being refined.

Amazon’s new offering competes directly with established online car‑buying platforms such as Carvana and traditional dealership portals. Amazon’s advantage lies in its trusted brand, Prime membership base, and integrated logistics network, which together promise a streamlined online buying experience that still requires pickup at a local dealer.

Beyond vehicle sales, Amazon is positioning the Autos platform as a new advertising channel for automakers. By leveraging its vast customer data and high traffic, Amazon can offer targeted ad placements to brands, creating an additional revenue stream that complements the core sales model.

Management comments underscore the early‑stage optimism and dealer perspective. Fan Jin, director of Amazon Autos, said, "While still early days, we are seeing a strong response from customers and dealers and we continue to expand vehicle availability across the country." Dealer Matthew Phillips noted, "I think it's a really innovative product. Customers have a level of comfort with Amazon, but it's definitely just in the starting phase." José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, added, "At Hyundai, we put the customer at the center of everything we do, and we are always looking for ways to improve the vehicle purchasing experience. We're thrilled to be the first brand enabling our dealers to sell vehicles through Amazon Autos. This collaboration allows customers to conveniently discover, learn about, and purchase their preferred Hyundai model from their local dealer through one of the world's most trusted shopping experiences. It represents the future of automotive retail and our commitment to redefining how cars are marketed and purchased."

Amazon’s expansion signals a strategic push to disrupt traditional automotive retail. By offering a fully online browsing, financing, and purchase process while still relying on local dealers for final delivery, Amazon positions itself as a lead‑generation partner rather than a direct replacement for dealerships. The program’s early modest sales reflect the learning curve, but the addition of major brands and the potential for advertising revenue suggest a long‑term growth trajectory that could reshape the U.S. new‑car market and diversify Amazon’s revenue base.
