Amazon has announced that its same‑day prescription delivery service will be available in nearly 4,500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, adding roughly 2,000 new communities, including new service areas in Idaho and Massachusetts. The expansion is designed to bring faster access to medication for patients in regions that have experienced pharmacy closures, staffing shortages, and transportation barriers.

The move leverages Amazon’s extensive logistics network, allowing prescriptions to be delivered within hours of ordering. By addressing the gaps left by traditional pharmacies, Amazon aims to improve medication adherence and reduce the time patients wait to start treatment. The expansion also supports the company’s broader strategy to grow its healthcare footprint and create cross‑segment synergies with its retail and cloud businesses.

Amazon Pharmacy currently holds a small share of the overall U.S. pharmacy market—estimated at about 1%—but the new coverage is expected to increase its customer base, drive higher prescription volumes, and generate incremental revenue and margin for the health‑care segment. The expansion is part of Amazon’s long‑term plan to integrate health services across its ecosystem, following acquisitions such as PillPack and One Medical and the launch of Amazon Clinic.

"Patients shouldn’t have to choose between speed, cost, and convenience when it comes to their medication, regardless of where they live," said John Love, vice president of Amazon Pharmacy. "By combining our pharmacy expertise with our logistics network, we’re removing critical barriers and helping patients start treatment faster—setting a new standard for accessible, digital‑forward pharmacy care."

The expansion reflects Amazon’s continued investment in healthcare, positioning the company to compete with traditional pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens and other digital‑health platforms. While Amazon Pharmacy remains a small player in the market, the broadened reach signals a strategic push to capture underserved areas and strengthen its role as a one‑stop health‑care provider.
