Amazon in Advanced Talks to Acquire Globalstar for $9 B

Amazon announced on April 1 2026 that it is in advanced talks to acquire satellite‑communications company Globalstar for about $9 billion. The deal would give Amazon a larger satellite‑based internet footprint, complementing its Amazon Leo constellation and positioning it to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink.

Globalstar operates a constellation of 24–25 low‑Earth‑orbit satellites, 28 ground stations in 18 countries, and holds exclusive licenses to mid‑band spectrum (Band 53 and Band n53). The company turned profitable in 2025 with $273 million in revenue, following $250.3 million in 2024.

Amazon’s Amazon Leo program has launched roughly 180–214 satellites to date, far below its target of 3,200. The acquisition would provide Amazon with immediate access to spectrum, ground infrastructure, and operational expertise, accelerating the deployment of its satellite‑internet service and narrowing the gap with Starlink’s 9,500‑plus constellation.

Apple owns a 20 % stake in Globalstar and relies on the network for its Emergency SOS via Satellite feature. The stake gives Apple a potential veto and requires Amazon to negotiate a separate agreement or buy‑out to secure uninterrupted service for Apple customers, adding complexity to the transaction.

The Federal Communications Commission has begun reviewing the proposed acquisition, and the deal is subject to regulatory approval. Investors have reacted strongly to the news, reflecting confidence in the strategic value of Globalstar’s spectrum and infrastructure for Amazon’s cloud and AI services.

If completed, the deal would transform Amazon’s satellite strategy, providing a ready‑made network that could be integrated with Amazon Web Services to offer direct connectivity for enterprise customers. The transaction would also intensify competition in the LEO satellite market, forcing rivals to accelerate their own deployments and potentially reshaping the industry’s competitive dynamics.
