Rasmussen University announced the launch of a new weekend Practical Nursing (LPN) Diploma program at its Fort Myers campus. The program will begin in July 2026 and can be completed in as few as 15 months. It offers a Friday‑Sunday schedule that blends on‑campus and online coursework, hands‑on field experience, and optional self‑directed assessments, all designed to prepare students for the NCLEX‑PN® exam.

The program targets Southwest Florida, a region projected to have only 55 % of its nursing workforce supply meeting demand by 2037, down from 85 % in 2022. By addressing this projected shortage, the new LPN program taps a strong market need and aligns with the Florida Center for Nursing’s data on workforce deficits.

For Rasmussen University and APEI, the launch is a material operational milestone. It expands enrollment options, supports APEI’s strategy of serving high‑demand defensive niches, and builds on the success of weekend LPN programs at other Florida campuses. The expansion is expected to drive future revenue growth in the nursing segment.

While Rasmussen University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, the new Fort Myers LPN program is not programmatically accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Prospective students should verify accreditation status before enrolling.

"By expanding our weekend LPN program to Fort Myers, we're helping more individuals launch meaningful healthcare careers right here in Southwest Florida," said Tom Toner, Campus Executive Director. "We've seen tremendous success with our weekend LPN programs across Florida. These programs help students balance work, family, and education while gaining the essential skills and confidence needed for a rewarding nursing career. We're proud to bring this opportunity to Fort Myers and support the growing demand for practical nurses in our community," added Terri Hothem, Area Dean of Nursing. "Accessible, high-quality nursing education makes a real difference for both students and the patients they serve," Tom Toner added.
