AeroVironment, Inc. (AVAV) announced that the U.S. Navy has selected the company to provide Contractor‑Owned, Contractor‑Operated (COCO) intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) services using its JUMP 20‑X Group 3 vertical‑take‑off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft system. The award, announced on April 2, 2026, establishes a long‑term service agreement that will generate recurring revenue for the company.

The JUMP 20‑X platform delivers more than 13 hours of flight time, a 115‑mile range, and a 30‑pound payload capacity. Its modular architecture supports over 70 different sensor payloads, enabling the system to perform a wide range of land‑ and maritime‑focused ISR missions.

The contract is structured as a COCO arrangement, meaning AeroVironment will own and operate the aircraft while the Navy retains operational control. While the financial value and duration of the agreement were not disclosed, the long‑term nature of the service agreement signals a shift toward a recurring revenue model for the company.

The award comes as AeroVironment continues to pursue a broader defense portfolio following its acquisition of BlueHalo in May 2025 for approximately $4.1 billion in an all‑stock transaction. The company has faced uncertainty around a key Pentagon contract tied to BlueHalo that is currently subject to a competitive rebid, adding a headwind to its growth prospects. Nevertheless, the Navy contract reinforces AeroVironment’s position as a key partner for future ISR deployments and supports its strategic goal of becoming a prime contractor in multi‑domain warfare.

Shane Hastings, Vice President of Medium Uncrewed Systems, said, "We are honored to be selected as a partner to help the U.S. Navy expand its ISR services and enhance mission‑critical awareness for warfighters around the globe." He added, "We have the people and product to deliver a superior capability across the fleet and are committed to supporting our customers with a flexible, scalable, full‑lifecycle ISR solution–any mission, any domain."

The contract win not only expands AeroVironment’s presence in the Navy’s ISR portfolio but also provides a stable, recurring revenue stream that can help offset the company’s recent financial challenges, including a $151.3 million goodwill impairment in its space division. By securing a long‑term service agreement, AeroVironment is positioning itself to capitalize on the growing demand for autonomous ISR solutions while navigating the integration risks associated with its BlueHalo acquisition.
