On May 4, 2026, the U.S. Army awarded AeroVironment a prototype agreement for its Switchblade 400 loitering munition under the Low‑Altitude Stalking and Strike Ordnance (LASSO) program. The award marks a key milestone for the company, positioning the Switchblade 400—a medium‑range, man‑portable anti‑armor system—as a central element of the Army’s effort to accelerate the development, testing, and fielding of loitering munitions for low‑altitude operations.

The prototype agreement follows a recent $14.6 million production contract for the VAPOR Compact Long Endurance (CLE) unmanned aircraft system, which the Army awarded in late April 2026. The VAPOR contract, part of the Tranche 2 small UAS procurement for the Medium Range Reconnaissance initiative, underscores the Army’s confidence in AeroVironment’s portfolio. The company’s recent acquisition of BlueHalo on May 1, 2025 has also contributed to a surge in revenue, with the combined businesses driving a 143 % year‑over‑year increase in Q3 fiscal year 2026 revenue to $408.0 million from $167.6 million in Q3 fiscal year 2025.

Segment‑level data show that the Autonomous Systems division generated $278.7 million in revenue, while the Space, Cyber and Directed Energy segment contributed $129.3 million, together accounting for the bulk of the company’s $408.0 million top line. The Autonomous Systems segment’s growth was driven by strong demand for the Switchblade 400 and other man‑portable platforms, whereas the Space segment benefited from the BlueHalo acquisition and ongoing contracts with the Space Force.

Trace Stevenson, President of Autonomous Systems, said, “This award reflects the Army's confidence not only in Switchblade 400, but in AV's ability to deliver at scale. Being selected under the LASSO program positions AV as a long‑term partner to the Army as it modernizes its loitering munition capabilities, from development and testing through production, fielding, and continuous capability evolution.” CEO Wahid Nawabi added, “While our third quarter results were impacted by revenue timing and adjustments in our Space business, demand for our unique solutions remains robust. Strong order flow and growth in funded backlog during the quarter are setting the stage for record fourth quarter revenue and a solid start to fiscal year 2027. We are executing with discipline, scaling manufacturing ahead of demand and accelerating the commercialization of our platforms to improve profitability and time to market. We believe there are tremendous opportunities ahead for AV to shape the next era of defense and we remain confident in our ability to deliver long‑term shareholder value.”

Investors noted the missed guidance and a goodwill impairment charge of $151.3 million related to a stop‑work order on a Space Force contract, which tempered enthusiasm for the contract win. Nonetheless, the prototype agreement is viewed as a positive signal of the Army’s confidence in AeroVironment’s technology and a potential catalyst for future production orders.

The LASSO program’s focus on rapidly deployable, precision strike capabilities aligns with the Army’s broader modernization strategy, and the Switchblade 400’s selection positions AeroVironment to play a leading role in the next generation of loitering munitions. The company’s continued expansion into space, cyber, and directed energy, combined with its growing autonomous systems portfolio, suggests a diversified growth trajectory that could translate into additional defense contracts beyond the LASSO program.
