Air India placed an order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft—20 737‑8s and 10 737‑10s—announced on January 29 2026. The order expands the airline’s single‑aisle fleet and brings its total Boeing commitments to nearly 200 aircraft.

The purchase supports Air India’s strategy to grow its domestic and regional network in India’s fast‑growing aviation market. 737‑8s will serve high‑frequency, short‑haul routes, while 737‑10s will provide higher capacity on longer domestic legs. The order is part of a broader fleet‑modernization program that began after Tata Group’s acquisition of the airline in 2022.

For Boeing, the order is a significant revenue driver for its commercial airplane segment and reinforces the company’s recovery momentum in the single‑aisle market. The 737 MAX family competes with the Airbus A320neo, and Air India’s commitment signals confidence in the MAX’s fuel efficiency and operational commonality. Boeing’s backlog of 4,853 additional 737 MAX aircraft underscores the sustained demand for the platform.

Air India’s total Boeing order book now approaches 200 aircraft, with 169 737 MAXs, 19 787s, and 10 777s on order. The new 30‑aircraft order brings the total to nearly 200, though some estimates place the total at around 250 when including other aircraft types. The company also announced the conversion of 15 A321neo orders to A321XLRs on the same day, further expanding its narrow‑body fleet.

Management emphasized the strategic importance of the order. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the additional MAX jets would help the airline “position Air India firmly for the future, as a world‑class global carrier that India deserves and the world expects.” Boeing Vice President Paul Righi noted that the order “underscores the strong performance of Air India’s existing 737‑8 fleet as they continue to expand connectivity across India and the South Asia region.”

The order is expected to be delivered over the next few years, with deliveries planned to support steady fleet upgrades. While the financial value of the order and specific delivery dates were not disclosed, the commitment reflects Air India’s confidence in the 737 MAX’s ability to meet the country’s growing demand for single‑aisle aircraft, which is projected to account for roughly 90% of the 3,300 new planes needed in the region over the next two decades.
