Boeing announced that the U.S. Air Force has placed an order for five additional E‑7A Wedgetail aircraft, bringing the total U.S. order to seven units (two prototypes and five production aircraft). The order was formally placed on March 12 2026 and publicly disclosed on April 30 2026.

The amendment to the existing contract is valued at $2.4 billion, which brings the cumulative value of the seven aircraft, including development costs, to roughly $5 billion. The new order adds a multi‑year revenue stream to Boeing’s Defense, Space & Security (BDS) segment and expands the company’s presence in the U.S. defense market.

Boeing’s BDS segment has been a key driver of the company’s recent financial performance. In the first quarter of 2026, BDS revenue rose 21% year‑over‑year to $7.6 billion, and the segment’s operating margin improved to 3.1%. The backlog for BDS reached a record $86 billion, and the new Wedgetail order contributes to both the backlog and the projected revenue stream for the coming years.

The E‑7A Wedgetail is a critical component of the U.S. Air Force’s modernization effort, replacing the aging E‑3 Sentry platform. The program has faced scrutiny and potential cancellation, but congressional intervention and the recent order have secured its continuation. The new order therefore reinforces the program’s trajectory and underscores Boeing’s strategic focus on high‑value defense contracts.

Boeing’s Q1 2026 earnings beat analyst expectations, with revenue and earnings per share exceeding forecasts. The strong defense performance, highlighted by the Wedgetail order, was a key factor in the earnings beat and has helped maintain a positive analyst outlook. The order strengthens the company’s defense momentum and supports its long‑term growth strategy.

While international interest in the Wedgetail has waned—South Korea chose a competing offer in October 2025 and NATO abandoned its plans to acquire six aircraft—the U.S. order remains a significant win for Boeing and a cornerstone of its defense portfolio.

The five‑aircraft order not only expands Boeing’s defense revenue base but also positions the company to capture future sustainment and upgrade opportunities for the U.S. Air Force, reinforcing Boeing’s long‑term competitive advantage in the high‑value defense market.
