Ethiopian Airlines has placed an order for nine Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner aircraft, expanding its long‑haul fleet to serve 145 international destinations. The order, finalized in December 2025, will be delivered between 2031 and 2033 and adds a substantial revenue stream for Boeing’s commercial airplane division.

The 787‑9’s fuel‑efficient design aligns with Ethiopian’s strategy to reduce operating costs while expanding its route network. The aircraft cuts fuel use and emissions by roughly 25% compared with older models, supporting the airline’s sustainability goals and cost‑control objectives.

Ethiopian currently operates Africa’s largest 787 fleet, comprising 20 787‑8s and 10 787‑9s. The new nine‑aircraft order will increase the total to 19 787‑9s, strengthening the airline’s long‑haul capacity and enabling further network expansion beyond its existing destinations.

Boeing’s commercial order book grew to 20 new aircraft in December 2025, including 11 737 MAXs and the nine 787‑9s. The order reinforces Boeing’s position in the African market, where the company projects passenger traffic to more than double by 2044. Boeing’s revenue for the last twelve months reached $80.76 billion, up 10.18% year‑over‑year, and the company is preparing to report its Q4 earnings on January 27.

"We are pleased to confirm the order for nine Boeing 787 Dreamliners," said Mesfin Tasew, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO. "The 787‑9s will support our expansion beyond the existing long‑haul network and reinforce our commitment to sustainable aviation."

"The 787 Dreamliner family has proven to be a game‑changer for airlines worldwide," added Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa. "We are proud to support Ethiopian Airlines in connecting Africa with the global community through advanced, efficient aircraft."
