Israel’s defense ministry approved a plan to acquire new F‑35 and F‑15IA fighter aircraft from Lockheed Martin and Boeing as part of a broader 350‑billion‑shekel ($119 billion) defense program aimed at strengthening the country’s air capabilities.
The procurement includes a second squadron of F‑15IA jets, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2031, and a fourth squadron of F‑35s, with initial deliveries expected in 2028. The order builds on a prior $8.6 billion Boeing deal for 25 F‑15IAs with options for additional aircraft.
The plan is a core element of Israel’s “Shield of Israel” modernization program, which also incorporates autonomous flight systems, next‑generation defense technologies, and expansion into space‑based operations. The program is designed to secure the IDF’s qualitative edge for the next decade and beyond.
Amir Baram, Director General of the Defense Ministry, said, “The approval of this procurement is the first major step in executing the 350‑billion‑NIS force buildup plan for an intense security decade ahead. Alongside immediate wartime procurement needs, we have a responsibility to act now to secure the IDF’s military edge ten years from now and beyond.” Israel Katz, Defense Minister, added, “The lessons of that campaign require us to keep pressing forward on force buildup, to ensure air superiority for decades to come.”
The deal reinforces Boeing’s position as a key supplier of advanced fighters to Israel and underscores the enduring U.S.‑Israel defense partnership. It also signals continued U.S. support for Israel’s strategic deterrence amid heightened regional tensions, particularly following the recent conflict with Iran.
