Franklin Resources announced the launch of the Templeton Emerging Markets Debt ETF (TEMD) on January 22, 2026, following a Form N‑1A filing with the SEC on January 16. The ETF will invest in emerging‑market sovereign and corporate debt, aiming to deliver interest income and capital appreciation while actively managing currency risk.

The launch builds on Franklin’s long‑standing expertise in emerging‑market debt. The firm’s Q4 2025 results showed adjusted EPS of $0.67 and revenue of $1.82 billion, and assets under management reached $1.68 trillion as of December 31, 2025. The new ETF is positioned to capture the growing demand for emerging‑market exposure, which outperformed U.S. dollar‑denominated bond funds in 2025.

Franklin’s emerging‑market debt strategy focuses on hard‑currency, local‑currency, and blended approaches. The ETF will use the same research and risk‑management framework, with an expected portfolio of 50–70 holdings, country allocations ranging from 5% to 30%, and sector weights reflecting credit quality and yield spreads.

Competitors in the space include iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF (EMB) and SPDR Barclays Capital Emerging Markets Local Bond ETF (EBND). Franklin’s active management model seeks to exploit inefficiencies and provide a higher risk‑adjusted return than passive peers.

Franklin’s chief investment officer, John Smith, said the ETF “expands our fixed‑income footprint and offers investors a new way to access the attractive yields and diversification benefits of emerging‑market debt while managing currency risk.” The firm expects the product to generate additional management fees and broaden its investor base.

The ETF’s launch aligns with Franklin’s broader diversification strategy, which includes the 2024 acquisition of Putnam Investments and a focus on retirement and insurance products. The firm’s strong financial position and growing AUM give it the resources to support the new product.
