BWXT Technologies, Inc. notified the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on April 7 2026 that it intends to apply for a uranium‑enrichment license for a new facility adjacent to its existing Nuclear Fuel Services plant in Erwin, Tennessee.

The notification launches the NRC’s pre‑application review and supports BWXT’s $1.5 billion contract with the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, which aims to restore a fully domestic enrichment capability for naval propulsion and other national‑security missions.

The new plant will use centrifuge technology developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory through the NNSA‑funded Domestic Uranium Enrichment Centrifuge Experiment program. BWXT’s Centrifuge Manufacturing Development Facility, opened in Oak Ridge on January 26 2026, will provide the design, engineering, fabrication, and testing needed for the Erwin site. The facility is expected to become operational around 2035 and is projected to create roughly 100 high‑skill jobs.

By initiating the licensing process, BWXT is expanding its core enrichment business and positioning itself to generate a new revenue stream that strengthens its strategic moat in the nuclear infrastructure market. The long‑term investment signals confidence in the sustained demand for domestic enrichment and the company’s ability to deliver advanced manufacturing solutions for national‑security applications.

"Establishing reliable U.S. enrichment capacity is critical to ensuring the long‑term availability of fuel for naval nuclear propulsion and other national security needs," said BWXT President and CEO Rex D. Geveden. "Our planned facility will leverage state‑of‑the‑art centrifuge technology and BWXT's advanced manufacturing expertise to deliver a resilient and secure American supply of enriched uranium."
