BuzzFeed, Inc. (NASDAQ: BZFD) announced the creation of a new independent company, Branch Office, at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival on March 13 2026. The spinoff will develop a suite of AI‑driven applications that aim to foster creative, community‑centric experiences rather than rely on algorithmic feeds.
Branch Office’s first two products, Conjure and BF Island, were unveiled during the event. Conjure is slated for a near‑future launch on the iOS App Store, while BF Island remains in private beta. The new entity will operate with its own founders and product philosophy, positioning itself as a distinct AI platform separate from BuzzFeed’s core content and commerce businesses.
The announcement comes amid a severe liquidity crisis for BuzzFeed. The company has issued a “going concern” warning, indicating doubt about its ability to continue operating. As of December 31 2025, BuzzFeed had only $8.5 million in unrestricted cash and had drawn $18.7 million in operating cash flow during 2025. The company has also withheld its 2026 financial guidance while it evaluates strategic options to address these challenges.
BuzzFeed’s Q4 2025 results reflected the financial strain. Revenue for the quarter rose 0.6 % year‑over‑year to $56.5 million, and Adjusted EBITDA improved to $12.0 million from $10.9 million in Q4 2024. However, the full‑year 2025 revenue fell 2.4 % to $185.3 million, and the company posted a net loss of $57.3 million, largely driven by a $30.2 million goodwill impairment charge. These figures underscore the company’s ongoing profitability challenges even as it invests in new AI initiatives.
Management has acknowledged the urgency of the situation. CEO Jonah Peretti said, "We believe there is a gap between the value of our individual assets and our market capitalization that suggests significant unrecognized upside." CFO Matt Omer added, "We're engaged in strategic conversations to unlock the value Jonah described and remedy the liquidity challenges we currently face." Peretti also highlighted the strategic rationale for Branch Office, stating, "We're accelerating into an era of infinite fake news, slop, personalization bubbles, and cuts at the organizations that actually care about content. We need a solution. Branch Office is that solution." Founder Bill Shouldis of Branch Office noted, "Most companies are using AI to replace human creativity. We're leveraging it to connect people."
Investors reacted negatively to the announcement, citing the company’s liquidity challenges and the “going concern” warning as primary concerns. The spinoff’s launch, while a bold strategic move, is viewed as a potential lifeline amid BuzzFeed’s broader financial distress.
