Constellation Energy Files Request to Accelerate Grid Connection of Crane Clean Energy Center

Constellation Energy filed a formal request with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to accelerate the interconnection of its Crane Clean Energy Center—formerly Three Mile Island Unit 1—to the electric grid, with the goal of restarting the 835‑MW plant by the end of 2027.

The restart is a key component of Constellation’s strategy to meet the growing demand for clean, reliable power from data‑center operators, most notably a 20‑year power purchase agreement with Microsoft that will use the plant’s full capacity to power its AI‑driven data centers.

PJM, the regional transmission operator, has indicated that the necessary transmission upgrades may not be completed until 2031, creating a significant gap between Constellation’s 2027 restart target and the grid’s projected availability. This discrepancy has become a focal point for investors and regulators alike.

Management has acknowledged the challenge. CEO Joe Dominguez said, “We talked this week about PJM studies that indicate interconnection could be delayed into the 2030s. I want to assure you we are working on that with PJM and we continue to expect to start this unit in 2027.” Chief external affairs officer David Dardis noted that PJM’s 2031 estimate reflects the first phase of a three‑part study, and the company’s statement to PennLive emphasized that Constellation is actively exploring options to move the schedule forward.

Analysts have expressed concern over the grid‑connection uncertainty and Constellation’s 2026 adjusted operating earnings guidance of $11 to $12 per share, which missed consensus estimates of $11.72. The guidance miss reflects the complexity of integrating the recently acquired Calpine assets and the headwinds associated with the restart’s regulatory and infrastructure hurdles.

The restart is part of a broader strategic shift that includes the January 7, 2026 acquisition of Calpine, which combined Constellation’s nuclear fleet with Calpine’s natural‑gas portfolio to create the largest private‑sector power producer in the United States. The addition of the Crane Clean Energy Center’s clean capacity strengthens Constellation’s competitive position in the wholesale market and supports its long‑term growth in the clean‑energy sector.
