Ciena Corporation announced the deployment of its 6500 Packet‑Optical Platform, powered by WaveLogic 5 Extreme coherent transceivers, on a 150‑kilometer fiber route that now delivers 800 Gb/s between Serbia and Bosnia‑Herzegovina.
The high‑capacity, low‑latency link will support hyperscaler traffic and 5G services, strengthening cross‑border connectivity in the Western Balkans and providing a foundation for future cloud‑centric workloads.
Telekom Srbija, which serves 11 million customers, and its subsidiary Mtel are the operators behind the project. The deployment expands Ciena’s presence in Southeast Europe and adds a significant new customer contract to its portfolio.
Ciena’s strategy focuses on partnering with regional telecoms to build AI‑ready infrastructure. The new link aligns with that strategy by delivering the bandwidth required for AI workloads and cloud services, positioning Ciena to capture growing demand for high‑speed optical networks in emerging markets.
Katarina Subotić, Chief Sales Officer at Telekom Srbija, said the project “enhances inter‑network connectivity and opens new prospects for regional expansion.” Anders Grand, Vice President of EMEA Sales at Ciena, noted that the deployment “aligns with Ciena’s commitment to delivering scalable, high‑performance solutions that meet evolving customer needs.”
The deployment follows Ciena’s strong Q4 2025 earnings, where the company beat expectations and raised its FY2026 revenue guidance to $5.7 billion–$6.1 billion, reflecting confidence in continued demand for AI‑driven network solutions.
The 800 Gb/s link is a milestone that demonstrates Ciena’s ability to deploy cutting‑edge optical technology at scale, reinforcing its competitive position in a market where hyperscalers and telecom operators are investing heavily in high‑capacity infrastructure.
