Lumen Technologies announced that it will deploy Ciena Corporation’s Blue Planet AI agents across its carrier network, integrating the Blue Planet AI Studio platform into its operations. The move marks a significant new customer win for Ciena’s software and services segment and expands the reach of its AI‑driven network management tools into a large U.S. service‑provider network.
Blue Planet AI Studio is a purpose‑built framework that enables the creation of intent‑driven agents to automate complex OSS workflows. By embedding these agents, Lumen aims to reduce manual intervention, accelerate operational efficiencies, and improve customer experience across its network domains. The partnership is part of Lumen’s broader strategy to position itself as “the trusted network for AI” and to accelerate the adoption of AI across its OSS environment.
Ciena’s software and services business has grown strongly in recent quarters. Q4 2025 revenue for the segment rose 20% year‑over‑year to $1.1 billion, and the company is guiding for FY26 revenue of $5.7 billion–$6.1 billion. The partnership with Lumen validates the market demand for Ciena’s AI platform and could open additional revenue streams as the company expands its AI agent portfolio to other operators.
Lumen’s Q4 2025 earnings report showed an EPS of $0.23, beating analyst estimates of –$0.21 by $0.44. The company’s revenue missed expectations, but the EPS beat was driven by cost control and a focus on high‑margin services. Lumen is also pursuing significant programmable fiber capacity deals totaling $13 billion through 2025, underscoring its commitment to network modernization and AI integration.
The collaboration signals broader market acceptance of Ciena’s AI‑powered solutions and positions the company to capture additional opportunities in the telecom AI space. It also reinforces Lumen’s strategy to reduce legacy complexity and accelerate automation across its network operations.
"Across our enterprise operations, we're using AI to digitize and automate core processes, eliminate legacy complexity, boost agility and speed, and free our teams to focus on higher‑value innovation that improves the customer experience. Blue Planet AI Studio is helping Lumen introduce AI‑driven capabilities into our OSS environment across real‑world workflows, enabling the creation of AI agents to help streamline operational tasks and reduce costs," said Kye Prigg, Chief Commercial Operations Officer, Lumen. "Blue Planet AI Studio is purpose‑built to support the automation of complex workflows, unlock deeper operational insights, and accelerate the journey toward fully autonomous networks. Our close collaboration with the Lumen team is helping drive the modernization of its network while enabling the adoption of advanced AI agents to establish a robust AI‑ready network foundation," added Joe Cumello, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Blue Planet.
