Costco Wholesale Corporation announced on March 1, 2026 that it had joined more than 1,800 other companies in filing lawsuits to recover refunds for tariffs imposed during the Trump administration that were recently invalidated by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court’s February 20, 2026 ruling, decided 6‑3, held that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not grant the President authority to impose the tariffs. Costco filed its own lawsuit in November 2025 to preserve its right to claim refunds before the Court’s decision, a common strategy among plaintiffs to avoid losing the opportunity to recover costs.

Costco’s fiscal 2025 revenue reached $275.24 billion, an 8.17% year‑over‑year increase, while the fourth quarter of 2025 generated $67.31 billion, up 8.3% YoY. Earnings per share for the quarter were $4.50, up 11.39% from the prior year. A successful refund could add substantial cash to the company’s balance sheet and reduce cost of goods sold, thereby improving operating margins in a low‑margin, membership‑driven model.

The potential refunds would directly lower Costco’s cost of goods sold, freeing capital that could be deployed toward store expansion, e‑commerce investment, or shareholder returns. By absorbing costs to protect members, Costco has historically maintained low prices; the refunds would reinforce that strategy and strengthen cash flow resilience.

Andrew Yoon, Director of Finance and Investor Relations, noted that comparable sales excluding gas and foreign‑exchange effects were 7.3% in the most recent quarter, underscoring robust demand. Costco’s internal cost‑absorption policy, combined with the anticipated refunds, positions the company to sustain pricing power and margin stability.

Headwinds such as rising labor and supply‑chain costs and a decline in gas prices remain, but the tariff refunds and accelerated e‑commerce growth provide tailwinds. The Supreme Court ruling removes a significant cost overhang, improving Costco’s forward outlook and reinforcing its competitive advantage in the retail sector.
