On May 1 2026, the Government of British Columbia announced that Canagold Resources Ltd.’s New Polaris gold‑antimony project had been added to the province’s list of priority major projects under the Look West economic update. The designation places the project among 17 new initiatives that the province will support with streamlined permitting, enhanced coordination across agencies, and increased regulatory certainty.

The move is intended to accelerate the development of critical‑minerals projects. New Polaris is a past‑producing, high‑grade gold‑antimony mine that the company owns 100 % of. Antimony is a critical mineral for green technologies, and the project’s inclusion on the priority list signals the province’s commitment to expanding domestic supply of this material. The designation also aligns with the province’s Look West strategy, which aims to accelerate approximately $88 billion in major project investments and create tens of thousands of jobs.

Canagold’s CEO, Catalin Kilofliski, said the designation “highlights the project’s potential to contribute to regional economic development, create high‑quality jobs, and support the responsible production of gold and critical minerals.” The company has recently completed a feasibility study (July 2025), submitted an Environmental Assessment application (April 1 2026), and was added to Canada’s Critical Metals Advanced Projects Map (March 16 2026).

The company also emphasizes its collaboration with the Taku River Tlingit First Nation, aiming to generate community benefits and opportunities. This partnership reflects the province’s broader strategy of fostering meaningful Indigenous engagement in resource development.

By receiving priority status, New Polaris is positioned to move closer to construction and production timelines, benefiting from the province’s streamlined permitting and inter‑agency coordination. The designation underscores the project’s strategic importance to British Columbia’s critical‑minerals agenda and its potential to contribute to the province’s economic growth.
