Carnival Corporation & plc’s Holland America Line has launched a $500 million‑plus Evolution modernization program that will renovate six of its vessels over the next several years. The initiative will add new stateroom categories, expand dining and bar options, refresh key guest spaces, and preserve the ships’ classic layout while improving energy efficiency and reducing operating costs.

The program will begin with the Oosterdam, which will receive the first set of upgrades in the fall of 2027. Subsequent renovations will target the four Vista‑class ships—Zuiderdam, Westerdam and Noordam—and the two Signature‑class vessels, Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam. The Oosterdam upgrade will add 76 new staterooms, including Solo Verandahs, Bridgeview Suites and panoramic suites, and will introduce the Grand Dutch Café, a venue previously exclusive to Pinnacle‑class ships.

"Our guests have been very clear about what they love about our ships and what they want to see more of, and Holland America Evolution is our answer to that," said Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line. "This investment allows us to introduce experiences and venues that are new to the fleet, add Pinnacle Class favorites like Grand Dutch Café, and create new stateroom categories designed for the way people travel today, all while preserving the perfectly sized ship experience that defines Holland America."

The program is being executed in partnership with Fincantieri, the shipbuilder that has constructed all Holland America Line vessels. The upgrades are designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, and support the company’s broader strategy of delivering differentiated, high‑quality cruise experiences that command premium pricing in a competitive market. Carnival CEO Josh Weinstein has emphasized that an 18‑year‑old ship can be maintained to feel like a one‑year‑old ship, and that the company will invest in return‑generating modernization programs across its cruise lines.

The Evolution program is a key component of Carnival’s shift from new‑build orders to refurbishments and product upgrades. By extending the useful life of its vessels and adding new stateroom categories, the company expects to increase passenger capacity and enhance onboard experience, positioning the fleet for higher yields in the coming years. The program also incorporates sustainability measures such as waste reduction, circular design, and targeted technical investments to improve energy efficiency, aligning with Carnival’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The investment represents a significant capital allocation that will strengthen Holland America Line’s competitive position and support its long‑term growth strategy. By modernizing its fleet, the line can continue to offer premium cruise experiences while managing operating costs and capital expenditures more efficiently.
