Delta announced that it will equip its 20 new A350‑1000 aircraft with a multi‑orbit in‑flight connectivity solution developed in partnership with Airbus and Hughes. The upgrade uses Airbus’ HBCplus platform and Hughes’ Fusion IFC technology to deliver high‑bandwidth satellite connectivity to passengers.
The first of the 20 aircraft is expected to enter service in 2027, with the full fleet scheduled for delivery by 2028 or early 2029. The multi‑orbit solution combines low‑Earth‑orbit and geostationary satellites, allowing dynamic routing and higher reliability.
Delta views the connectivity upgrade as a key component of its premium‑first strategy, aiming to enhance the passenger experience and generate ancillary revenue. While Wi‑Fi is not a primary revenue driver, the improved service is expected to strengthen loyalty and support other ancillary offerings such as seat upgrades and baggage fees.
The partnership positions Delta ahead of competitors such as American Airlines, United Airlines, and Southwest, many of whom are still deploying single‑orbit solutions. By offering seamless, high‑speed internet from gate to gate, Delta differentiates its premium cabins and reinforces its high‑margin product mix.
"Leveraging Airbus' industry leading systems integration and engineering capabilities, to integrate our Hughes' multi-orbit IFC solution, is a natural partnership that is already bringing real value to our delivery streams," said Joseph Eddy, Delta’s Director of Cabin Programmes. "This industry‑first solution ushers in a new era of connectivity experience for Delta. Using multiple antennas, we can now dynamically deliver the best experience for customers based on location, demand and network conditions," added Glenn Latta, Managing Director at Delta.
The in‑flight connectivity market is projected to grow from $5.5 billion in 2024 to nearly $10 billion by 2032, underscoring the strategic importance of early adoption. Delta’s investment aligns with its broader fleet modernization plan, which seeks to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and elevate passenger comfort across its network.
The move also supports Delta’s goal of strengthening its SkyMiles loyalty program and expanding ancillary revenue streams, as reliable connectivity can enhance customer engagement and encourage additional purchases on board.
