Ginkgo Bioworks announced the launch of its Ginkgo Cloud Lab on March 2, 2026, a web‑based interface that gives researchers remote access to the company’s fleet of autonomous laboratory units. The platform is powered by Reconfigurable Automation Carts (RACs), modular robots that combine robotic arms, maglev sample transport tracks, and industrial‑grade software, allowing the system to be reconfigured like LEGO blocks.

The new Cloud Lab provides access to more than 70 instruments that cover sample preparation, liquid handling, analytical readouts, storage, and incubation. An AI‑driven agent called EstiMate lets scientists submit a protocol in plain language, receive an immediate compatibility assessment, and obtain a transparent price quote for running the protocol on the autonomous fleet.

Ginkgo’s launch comes amid a broader strategic pivot. In its most recent earnings release, the company reported Q4 2025 revenue of $33 million, down 24% year‑over‑year and below analyst expectations of over $37 million. The decline was driven by customer program rationalization and a shift from early‑stage customers to larger enterprise accounts, particularly in the Cell Engineering segment, which saw a 26% drop. Despite the revenue miss, the company’s adjusted EBITDA improved to –$36 million from –$57 million in Q4 2024, reflecting tighter cost control and a more favorable mix.

Management emphasized the importance of the Cloud Lab launch. CEO Jason Kelly said, "Autonomous labs are poised to scale and accelerate the high‑mix work that a lab bench supports. By opening up our autonomous infrastructure through the Cloud Lab, we're giving scientists access to these tools today." He added, "This year, we are going to focus on investing to win in the category of autonomous labs. There is an emerging wave of interest in robotics and AI, and our work with the Department of Energy and OpenAI this year shows that Ginkgo is in the best position to bring robotics to an extraordinarily high value area: laboratory research." Kelly also noted that the company viewed Q4 2025 as a "breakout quarter" in defining and leading the autonomous‑lab category.

Looking ahead, Ginkgo has guided for a 2026 cash burn between $(150) million and $(125) million, indicating disciplined capital usage while investing in the new platform. The company’s focus on autonomous labs is expected to drive recurring revenue growth, offsetting short‑term revenue headwinds and positioning Ginkgo as a leader in the rapidly expanding autonomous‑lab market.
