Encompass Health Corp. and Cookeville Regional Medical Center announced the construction of a 40‑bed freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital on the Cookeville campus. The new facility will provide dedicated care for patients recovering from stroke, neurological conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations, and complex orthopedic issues, and will feature private rooms, a state‑of‑the‑art therapy gym, an in‑house dialysis suite, a dining room, a pharmacy, and an outdoor therapy courtyard.

The announcement follows Encompass Health’s takeover of the existing 20‑bed inpatient rehabilitation unit at the same campus on January 1 2026. With the new hospital, the company will operate its 12th Tennessee location and will bring its total network to 174 hospitals across 39 states and Puerto Rico. The Cookeville expansion is slated to open in 2027 and will add 40 additional beds to the company’s rehabilitation capacity.

The Upper Cumberland Region, where Cookeville is located, is a rapidly aging retirement destination that has been identified by Encompass Health as an underserved market. By adding capacity in this area, the company aims to capture a larger share of Medicare and Medicare Advantage referrals, reinforcing its strategy of expanding in high‑growth, high‑margin segments and strengthening its competitive position in the inpatient rehabilitation market.

Encompass Health’s Q1 2026 earnings are scheduled for release on April 30 2026, not yet reported. For context, the company’s Q1 2025 revenue was $1.455 billion with an adjusted EPS of $1.37, while Q4 2025 revenue was $1.545 billion and adjusted EPS was $1.46. Management has guided FY 2026 revenue to $6.365–$6.465 billion, adjusted EPS to $5.81–$6.10, and adjusted EBITDA to $1.34–$1.38 billion, signaling confidence in continued growth and margin expansion.

Abe Sims, president of Encompass Health’s Mid‑Atlantic region, said, “We’re proud to partner with Cookeville Regional Medical Center to address the growing demand for inpatient rehabilitation care in the Upper Cumberland Region, a premier retirement destination with a rapidly aging population.” Buffy Key, chief executive officer at Cookeville Regional Medical Center, added, “This state‑of‑the‑art facility is designed to support patients recovering from serious illness, injury or surgery. With advanced therapy equipment, individualized care plans and a highly trained team, we will help patients regain their independence and enhance their quality of life. A key feature that sets this facility apart is that every room will be private.”

The expansion aligns with Encompass Health’s broader strategy of adding capacity in high‑growth, underserved markets. By increasing bed count in a region with a strong Medicare base, the company is positioned to capture a larger share of referral volume, improve patient access, and reinforce its national network’s geographic reach. The new hospital also supports the company’s focus on operational efficiency and margin expansion, as the addition of a freestanding facility allows for streamlined care delivery and potential cost savings through economies of scale.
