Equinix announced on January 29 that it has activated Australia’s first sovereign AI infrastructure node at its SY5 data centre in Sydney. The node delivers locally hosted AI inferencing that meets strict data‑residency requirements and bypasses the power, cooling and cost constraints of traditional GPU‑based systems.

The ASIC‑accelerated architecture, built in partnership with SambaNova Systems, delivers higher energy efficiency and lower carbon output than GPU clusters. SCX.ai, the operator of the node, claims the system achieves the lowest carbon output per AI token in the Asia‑Pacific region, a key selling point for government and enterprise customers that must keep sensitive data onshore.

The launch aligns with Equinix’s “Build Bolder” strategy to double data‑centre capacity by 2029 and to capture the growing demand for AI inference workloads. By offering a secure, high‑performance platform, Equinix positions itself to win new government contracts and attract enterprises that face regulatory data‑residency mandates.

Guy Danskine, Managing Director for Australia, said sovereignty has become a growing consideration for organisations deploying AI, especially where regulatory and security requirements apply. The node will host SCX.ai’s Project MAGPiE, a large‑language model tailored to Australian terminology and context, further strengthening the domestic AI ecosystem.

While the announcement does not include commercial terms, the deployment demonstrates Equinix’s ability to deliver specialized, high‑performance solutions that meet emerging regulatory and performance demands. The move also signals a broader industry shift toward energy‑efficient AI infrastructure that reduces reliance on GPU clusters.
