Ford announced a recall of 1.4 million F‑150 pickup trucks equipped with a six‑speed automatic transmission. The affected vehicles span model years 2015 through 2017, covering trucks built between March 12, 2014 and August 18, 2017. The recall is triggered by a software defect that can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift into second gear when the powertrain control module loses signal from the transmission range sensor.

The sudden downshift can abruptly reduce wheel speed and cause rear‑tire slide. Ford reports that the defect has already led to two injuries and one accident. As of early April, 444 warranty claims and 105 customer‑service reports have been filed. Owners will receive mail notices beginning April 27, 2026, and dealers will update the PCM software at no cost. The final remedy is expected in July 2026.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary evaluation of the issue in March 2025, which was elevated to an engineering analysis in January 2026. Ford was first notified of the defect in October 2024, and the NHTSA investigation underscores the regulatory scrutiny surrounding the recall.

This recall is Ford’s largest in company history and follows a trend of frequent safety notices—Ford logged 152 recalls in 2025, a record for the automaker. The F‑Series trucks are the company’s best‑selling line and a key revenue driver, so the recall may affect sales, dealer operations, and customer confidence. The announcement highlights Ford’s ongoing safety compliance efforts while also reflecting broader quality‑control challenges.

The recall’s impact extends beyond immediate repairs. By addressing the defect proactively, Ford demonstrates its commitment to safety, but the scale of the recall may strain dealer networks and erode brand trust. The event underscores the importance of robust software validation in modern vehicles and signals to investors that Ford must continue to invest in quality assurance to maintain its market position.
