FOX Latin America has secured a deal to acquire Tigo Sports’ local sports content, production capabilities, and on‑air talent across Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. The transaction adds more than 800 live‑sports events to FOX’s inventory each year, including full coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, and brings a robust portfolio of local rights such as El Salvador’s Primera División, Panama’s Football League, Costa Rica’s Liga Promérica, and Guatemala’s Liga Bantrab.
The acquisition also unlocks a slate of international rights for Tigo Central America customers, including the Premier League, UEFA Europa League, Bundesliga (starting in the 2026‑27 season), Saudi Pro League, and Liga MX. FOX plans to launch four new channels in the region in May 2026, and the Tigo Sports brand will disappear from Costa Rican screens after the World Cup concludes in July, with FOX taking its place. Production and commentary for the new channels may be centralized from Mexico, which could shift some local talent and production resources away from Costa Rica.
Strategically, the deal positions FOX to leverage its existing distribution network and advertising relationships in Central America, potentially boosting incremental revenue and enhancing the value proposition for both traditional and digital audiences. The acquisition intensifies competition in the region, as FOX now competes directly with other regional and international broadcasters for live‑sports advertising and subscription revenue.
Millicom’s Luciano Marino, VP of B2C, said, "Sports are a core part of our value proposition for customers in Central America, and we are committed to continuously enhancing that experience." He added, "This step allows us to deliver a broader and more compelling sports offering, including full access to the FIFA World Cup 2026 through Tigo Sports."
Carlos Martinez, EVP and MD for FOX Latin America, noted, "Central America is a region with a deep passion for sports, and we are excited to strengthen our presence by delivering a first‑class sports service that blends local content and talent with our existing international rights." He also stated, "At the same time, I am pleased to appoint Leandro Lagos as the head of Fox in Central America to help lead our operations in the territory."
