United Airlines announced a new order for 300 GE Aerospace GEnx engines to power its Boeing 787 Dreamliners, adding United to the world’s largest GEnx operator. The order includes spare engines and brings United’s 787 fleet to more than 200 GEnx‑powered aircraft.

The engines will be installed on United’s new 787‑9 and 787‑10 aircraft scheduled for delivery through 2032, with the first deliveries expected in 2027. The order is part of United’s “United Next” fleet modernization plan, which focuses on newer, fuel‑efficient widebodies to replace older 767 and 777 aircraft.

For GE Aerospace, the order strengthens its dominant position in the 787 engine market, where the GEnx powers roughly two‑thirds of the aircraft in operation. The new engines expand GE’s installed base and add to a backlog of roughly $190 billion, supporting the company’s strategy of deepening customer relationships and driving long‑term aftermarket revenue.

GE Aerospace’s Q4 2025 earnings, released on January 22 2026, showed revenue growth of 21 % and EPS up 38 %, underscoring the company’s strong commercial services performance. The new United order is expected to contribute to future revenue and service contracts, reinforcing the company’s high‑margin aftermarket business.

United’s choice of the GEnx engine aligns with its fleet commonality strategy, simplifying maintenance, crew training, and spare parts logistics. The GEnx’s advanced materials and fuel‑efficiency benefits support United’s goal of reducing operating costs and improving environmental performance on long‑haul routes.

The order also signals a shift in United’s engine strategy, following the company’s decision to remove the Airbus A350 from its delivery plans due to engine agreement disputes with Rolls‑Royce. By committing to the GEnx for its 787 fleet, United secures a reliable engine supplier and strengthens its long‑haul network.
