GE Vernova and Hitachi signed a Memorandum of Understanding on March 16, 2026 to explore the deployment of the BWRX‑300 small‑modular reactor (SMR) in Southeast Asia. The BWRX‑300 is a 300‑MW SMR derived from GE Vernova’s Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) design; it is currently under construction at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington site in Canada, with completion expected by the end of the decade, and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing a Tennessee Valley Authority application for a BWRX‑300 in the United States.

The agreement was signed at the Indo‑Pacific Energy Security Ministerial & Business Forum in Tokyo, with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry minister Ryosei Akazawa in attendance. The partnership expands GE Vernova’s nuclear footprint and complements its existing gas‑turbine and electrification businesses.

The collaboration leverages Hitachi’s long history in nuclear technology and the BWRX‑300’s proven design to meet Southeast Asia’s growing demand for low‑carbon, flexible power generation. The region’s energy mix remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels, and the BWRX‑300’s passive safety features and modular construction make it a suitable option for countries seeking scalable, low‑emission solutions.

"As more nations look to nuclear power to meet their energy security needs, GE Vernova and Hitachi look forward to continuing our long history of collaboration in support of the global nuclear industry. Our SMR technology can be a powerful tool for countries across Southeast Asia for generations to come," said Roger Martella, Chief Corporate Officer of GE Vernova. "Hitachi has continued to bring long‑standing experience in nuclear technology, through our partnership with GE Vernova, and we are excited to do even more by exploring the deployment of the BWRX‑300 in Southeast Asia. We aim to contribute to a sustainable energy future in the region by leveraging the capabilities of Hitachi and GE Vernova," added Yasunori Inada, Vice President, Executive Officer and CEO of Hitachi’s Nuclear Energy Business Unit.

The MoU signals intent to work together on design, licensing, and deployment, potentially leading to future contracts and joint ventures. If realized, the collaboration could open a new revenue stream and strengthen GE Vernova’s position in the rapidly expanding SMR market, which is expected to grow as countries seek scalable, low‑emission solutions.
