GlobalFoundries announced the launch of its SCALE optical module solution, a silicon photonics co‑packaged optics platform that is the first to meet the OCI MSA specification for modern AI scale‑up architectures. The announcement positions the company to capture a growing share of the AI infrastructure market, where optical interconnects are becoming essential for next‑generation data‑center performance.

The SCALE platform combines coarse and dense wavelength‑division multiplexing (CWDM and DWDM) to deliver bi‑directional data transmission over each optical fiber, enabling 8‑λ and 16‑λ DWDM natively. It integrates electrical integrated circuits on single‑digit advanced nodes and offers high‑speed through‑silicon vias and copper pad pitches down to sub‑45 µm, allowing customers to move quickly from design to volume production.

GlobalFoundries’ product launch follows a strategic shift toward specialty and mature nodes, including silicon photonics, and is supported by the company’s acquisition of Advanced Micro Foundry and the establishment of an Advanced Photonics Packaging Center. The move is bolstered by CHIPS Act incentives and positions GlobalFoundries as the third‑largest pure‑play foundry, differentiating it from TSMC and Samsung through specialty processes such as RF‑SOI and FD‑SOI.

The launch is significant because optical interconnects are critical for scaling AI infrastructure, and being the first to meet the OCI MSA spec gives GlobalFoundries a competitive edge. The company’s close collaboration with industry leaders and readiness to scale next‑generation AI infrastructure underscore the strategic importance of the product.

"With over a decade of innovation and manufacturing expertise in silicon photonics technology at our disposal, GF stands ready to unlock the future of high‑bandwidth, energy‑efficient connectivity with our SCALE solution for co‑packaged optics. Today, our technology already exceeds the requirements set by the OCI MSA, demonstrating our close collaboration with industry leaders and our technology's readiness to scale next‑generation, AI infrastructure," said Mike Hogan, chief business officer at GlobalFoundries.
