General Motors announced that it is indefinitely postponing the launch of its next‑generation full‑size electric truck line, which includes the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado models that were originally slated to begin production in 2028.
The decision follows a broader reassessment of the company’s electrification strategy, driven by a cooling demand for high‑priced electric pickups after the expiration of federal tax credits, the high cost of scaling EV production, and significant charges of $7.6 billion in 2025 and $7.1 billion in Q4 2025 to unwind supplier agreements. GM’s current generation of electric trucks will continue to be produced, but the next‑generation platform has been put on hold as the company reallocates resources toward more profitable internal‑combustion‑engine (ICE) trucks and SUVs and toward higher‑margin software and services initiatives.
The shift reflects GM’s focus on its most profitable segments—full‑size trucks and SUVs—while it continues to invest in new ICE platforms, such as a gas‑engine platform slated for the 2027 Chevy Silverado, and explores plug‑in hybrid and extended‑range electric options for the Silverado and Sierra. The company is also accelerating on‑shoring of production to North America to reduce supply‑chain risk and to support its software‑services business, which offers recurring revenue and higher margins than vehicle sales.
Industry analysts note that GM’s move is part of a broader trend among automakers to recalibrate EV plans in response to softer demand and policy changes. In the first quarter of 2026, GM sold about 1,400 Silverado EVs and 1,300 Sierra EVs, making it the second‑largest EV seller in the U.S. in the latter half of 2024. Factory Zero, GM’s dedicated EV plant, has experienced idling and workforce reductions as part of the company’s adjustment to the current market environment.
"We have not disclosed any potential plans or timing for any next‑generation battery electric trucks and will not engage in speculation," a GM spokesperson said. "EVs remain the end game for GM and we are firmly committed to our award‑winning electric truck and SUV portfolio, along with our advanced technology roadmap."
