Alphabet Inc. has entered into a long‑term geothermal power purchase agreement with NV Energy that will deliver 150 MW of clean, firm power to its Nevada data‑center operations. The agreement is being developed by Ormat Technologies, which has secured a PPA with NV Energy to supply the geothermal capacity.

Geothermal energy offers a steady, low‑carbon source that is well suited to the continuous, high‑density power demands of Alphabet’s AI and cloud workloads. By adding 150 MW of geothermal capacity, Alphabet moves closer to its goal of 24/7 carbon‑free energy for all data‑center sites.

The new capacity is expected to come online between 2028 and 2030, and the deal is enabled through NV Energy’s Clean Transition Tariff, which allows large customers to invest in renewable projects while protecting other ratepayers.

Briana Kobor, Head of Energy Market Innovation at Google, said, "By adding up to 150MW of new clean‑firm geothermal capacity in Nevada, we are utilizing a repeatable framework that fully covers all costs associated with our electric service, ensuring the CTT insulates other ratepayers while strengthening the reliability of the local power system." Doron Blachar, CEO of Ormat Technologies, added, "AI is fundamentally increasing electricity demand across the technology sector, and geothermal power is uniquely positioned to deliver the reliable, carbon‑free power required to support that growth."

The agreement fits into Alphabet’s broader renewable‑energy strategy, which includes the recent acquisition of Intersect, a clean‑energy developer, and a commitment to net‑zero emissions by 2030. The geothermal deal also demonstrates the company’s focus on securing reliable, low‑carbon power for its expanding AI infrastructure.

Investors in Ormat Technologies welcomed the announcement, reflecting confidence in the company’s geothermal growth and the broader trend of large tech firms securing clean‑energy contracts for data‑center operations.
