GoPro announced the launch of its GP3 imaging processor, a 5‑nanometer system‑on‑chip that delivers more than double the pixel‑processing power of the current GP2 platform. The new chip incorporates a dedicated AI neural processor unit, scene‑recognition cores and subject‑detection cores, enabling real‑time AI‑driven image enhancement and low‑light performance that the company says will surpass competitors’ capabilities.

The announcement comes as GoPro’s financials have been under pressure. In the third quarter of 2025, the company reported revenue of $163 million, down 37 % year‑over‑year, and a GAAP net loss of $21.3 million. Management has positioned the GP3 as a growth catalyst to reverse this trend, emphasizing that the processor will power a new generation of action, 360, vlogging and ultra‑compact cinema‑grade cameras and help the firm re‑enter higher‑margin segments.

"GP3’s bleeding‑edge, cinema‑grade performance will enable GoPro to enter the ultra‑premium end of the imaging market this year, serving the needs of a new, higher‑end market segment that can grow GoPro’s business and brand," said founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman. Senior Vice President of Product Management Pablo Lema added, "We expect our new, exclusive GP3 processor to lead in every performance area—image quality, resolution, frame rates, low‑light performance and power and thermal efficiency." These statements underscore the company’s belief that the chip will be a decisive differentiator against rivals such as DJI and Insta360.

The GP3 processor is slated to debut in new GoPro cameras in the second quarter of 2026. By making the chip a proprietary platform, GoPro aims to address the overheating and performance limits of the GP2, which had begun to constrain the company’s flagship HERO lineup. The move also supports GoPro’s broader strategy to diversify beyond action cameras, expanding into vlogging and cinema‑grade markets while leveraging subscription revenue streams that offer higher gross margins.

Looking ahead, GoPro expects the GP3 to drive a return to revenue growth and profitability in the fourth quarter of 2025 and throughout 2026. The company’s focus on AI‑driven imaging, coupled with its subscription and data‑licensing initiatives, positions it to capture a larger share of the growing global action‑camera market, projected to grow at a 12.1 % CAGR from 2026 to 2033. The processor’s advanced capabilities are intended to give GoPro a competitive edge in image quality, resolution, frame rates, low‑light performance and power efficiency, thereby supporting the firm’s ambition to regain market share and expand its product portfolio.
