Garrett Motion showcased a new portfolio of oil‑free centrifugal compressors at the China Refrigeration Expo in Shanghai, held from April 8‑10. The company introduced its largest unit, a 1,250 kWc compressor, and a range of models spanning 7 to 500 tons (25 to 1,750 kWc) designed for data‑center, battery‑energy‑storage‑system (BESS), and industrial cooling applications.
The compressors use high‑speed centrifugal turbomachinery, oil‑free foil bearings, and model‑based control algorithms. These features enable more than 10 % real‑world energy savings compared with traditional scroll and screw designs, support ultra‑low‑GWP refrigerants, and offer a compact, retrofit‑ready design suitable for rooftop, unitary, and modular chiller systems.
This launch marks a deliberate shift beyond Garrett’s turbocharger core. The company has set a target of $1 billion in revenue outside its automotive business by 2030, and the new line is positioned to capture growth in China’s rapidly expanding data‑center, BESS, and industrial refrigeration markets. A partnership with Trane Technologies will integrate the compressors into commercial HVAC applications, and the product was previously highlighted at the AHR Expo in Las Vegas in February 2026.
Financially, Garrett Motion reported Q4 2025 net sales of $891 million, up 6 % year‑over‑year, and a net income of $84 million, a 9.4 % margin. For the full year 2025, net sales were $3.584 billion, up 3 % from 2024, with a net income margin of 8.6 %. The company guided 2026 net sales to $3.6 billion–$3.8 billion and reported an EPS of $0.42 versus an estimate of $0.37, a beat of $0.05. Investors expressed caution over the guidance, citing modest growth expectations and margin compression concerns.
"Global demand for high‑efficiency, low‑environmental‑impact cooling technologies is accelerating, and China remains one of the fastest‑growing HVAC markets. Garrett is leveraging its differentiated technologies, proven in demanding automotive applications, to deliver disruptive solutions that provide unique value for the next generation of HVAC systems," said President & CEO Olivier Rabiller.
The new compressors compete with established players such as BorgWarner, Cummins, and Continental. While the launch positions Garrett to capture a share of the growing industrial cooling market, the company faces headwinds from margin pressures and the need to invest in scaling production. Nonetheless, the strategic pivot and partnership with Trane signal confidence in the long‑term upside of the high‑efficiency cooling segment.
