Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) secured a contract from the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to deliver a submarine Torpedo Tube Launch and Recovery (TTLR) system that will autonomously deploy and recover the company’s REMUS unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) from U.S. Navy submarines.
The award reinforces HII’s long‑standing leadership in under‑sea warfare. The company is one of only two builders of U.S. nuclear‑powered submarines and, after acquiring Hydroid Inc. in March 2020, is the world’s largest producer of REMUS UUVs, having delivered more than 750 units to over 30 countries.
HII’s Mission Technologies segment generated $3.0 billion in revenue in 2025, a 3.6% increase from 2024, and reported a 32% rise in operating income year‑over‑year. The new TTLR contract is expected to add recurring revenue over multiple years, further strengthening the segment’s growth trajectory and the company’s strategic moat.
The TTLR system will use the submarine’s torpedo tubes to launch and retrieve REMUS vehicles without surfacing. Previous trials demonstrated the system’s capability, including a June 2025 launch from the USS Delaware (SSN 791) and a July 2025 recovery of a REMUS 620 platform.
The contract is part of a broader trend of DIU’s Other Transaction Authority (OTA) programs that accelerate the adoption of autonomous systems. L3Harris Technologies also received an OTA contract to deliver a TTLR system for its Iver4 900 AUV, indicating growing demand for submarine‑based unmanned support.
Duane Fotheringham, president of HII’s Unmanned Systems group, said, "This contract award reflects HII’s 25‑year leadership in advancing autonomous unmanned maritime platforms and integrating them into submarine operations. There is no company with more expertise in both the manned and unmanned sides of teamed operations. We look forward to continuing our strong partnership with the U.S. Navy to deliver the innovative solutions our forces urgently need in the subsea domain."
The award aligns with the Navy’s emphasis on manned‑unmanned teaming (MUM‑T) and expands HII’s portfolio of autonomous solutions, positioning the company to capture additional opportunities in the growing under‑sea domain.
Financially, the contract is expected to generate recurring revenue over multiple years, reinforcing Mission Technologies’ growth momentum and supporting HII’s broader strategy to diversify beyond traditional shipbuilding.
