Himax Technologies today announced a new high‑contrast dual‑edge front‑lit liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) microdisplay that will be showcased on May 6 at the Society for Information Display (SID) Display Week 2026 in Los Angeles. The 720 × 720‑pixel module measures just 0.09 c.c. in volume and weighs 0.2 grams, making it one of the smallest and lightest LCoS units available for wearable augmented‑reality (AR) glasses.

The microdisplay delivers an impressive 350,000 nits of peak brightness and 1 lumen of output while drawing only 200 mW of power. Its full‑on full‑off (FOFO) contrast ratio has been increased from 250:1 to 450:1, and the addition of Dynamic Light Modulation (DLM) technology pushes contrast beyond 1,000:1, effectively eliminating the “postcard effect” that can appear in low‑light environments. The compact form factor and high‑contrast performance address the key challenges of AR display design—lightweight construction, power efficiency, and visual fidelity.

The launch aligns with Himax’s broader strategy to expand its WiseEye AI sensing and automotive OLED platforms while positioning the company as a provider of integrated visual‑computing solutions for AR/VR and automotive markets. The microdisplay is part of a portfolio that has already seen deployments with partners such as Vuzix and was showcased at CES 2026 and Display Week 2025, underscoring the company’s ongoing commitment to advancing AR display technology.

“Building on the landmark debut of our Front‑lit LCoS microdisplay at Display Week 2025, we are proud to return this year with a significantly enhanced solution that raises the bar on contrast, dynamic range, and system integration,” said Jordan Wu, CEO of Himax.

Himax has identified the AR glasses market as a high‑margin growth engine for 2027 and beyond, and the new microdisplay is intended to support that vision by providing a lightweight, high‑brightness, and low‑power display core that can be integrated into next‑generation AR headsets.
