Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced the successful conclusion of a two‑year pilot that covered roughly 3,000 miles of central and southeastern Ohio roads. The project was conducted in partnership with DriveOhio, the Ohio Department of Transportation’s smart‑mobility hub, and included technology partners i‑Probe Inc., Parsons Corporation, and the University of Cincinnati.

The pilot deployed Honda test vehicles equipped with advanced vision and LiDAR sensors that continuously scanned pavement, guardrails, signage, shoulder drops, potholes, faded lane markings, and road roughness. The system’s AI feedback loop achieved 99% accuracy for damaged or obstructed signs, 93% for guardrail damage, and 89% on average for pothole detection, validating the platform’s reliability in a real‑world environment.

Ohio DOT officials estimated that the pilot will generate more than $4.5 million in annual savings by enabling data‑driven maintenance scheduling and reducing manual inspection costs. The cost‑efficiency gains are expected to accelerate the state’s infrastructure renewal program and provide a model for other states to adopt similar technology.

For Honda, the pilot marks a strategic expansion beyond its traditional automotive and motorcycle businesses into public‑infrastructure innovation. The successful deployment demonstrates the company’s “Safety for Everyone” philosophy and positions Honda as a potential partner in the emerging smart‑mobility services market, opening new revenue streams that leverage its sensing and AI expertise.

ODOT Director Pam Boratyn praised the project, noting that “the technology has already improved worker safety and will help us maintain roads more efficiently.” Honda’s engineering team has been refining the prototype since 2021, and the company plans to explore commercializing the platform for broader infrastructure applications.
