Honeywell International announced that Petrobras has selected the company’s UOP Ethanol‑to‑Jet (ETJ) process technology for a new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility at its REPLAN refinery in São Paulo. The project will convert ethanol into jet fuel at a capacity of up to 10,000 barrels per day, marking the first large‑scale ETJ initiative in Latin America.

The selection expands Honeywell’s SAF portfolio and creates a new revenue stream for its process‑technology business. It also positions Honeywell as a key technology partner in a region that is rapidly advancing its SAF ambitions under Brazil’s “Fuel for the Future” law, which sets blending mandates beginning in 2025 and aims for significant emissions reductions by 2037.

For Petrobras, the project leverages the country’s abundant ethanol feedstock and aligns with its broader renewable‑energy strategy, which includes investments in wind, solar, and green hydrogen. The SAF facility will help Petrobras reduce aviation emissions and strengthen its reputation as a leader in sustainable energy.

Ken West, president and CEO of Honeywell Process Technology, said, “With Honeywell’s ethanol‑to‑jet process technology, Petrobras is positioned to deliver low‑carbon energy solutions leveraging abundant agricultural byproducts to create fuel, helping meet global demand.” José Fernandes, president of Honeywell Latin America, added, “Brazil has the scale, feedstock and technology partners needed to become a global powerhouse in sustainable aviation fuel. This project is a major milestone for the region and demonstrates how strategic collaboration can accelerate Brazil’s role in the energy transition.”

Honeywell’s ETJ technology is designed for high jet yield, lower capital and operating expenditures, and reduced greenhouse‑gas emissions, making it a scalable solution for converting ethanol into SAF. The partnership signals a growing market for sustainable aviation fuels and underscores both companies’ commitment to decarbonization and long‑term growth.
