InterDigital, Inc. filed lawsuits on February 12, 2026, against Hisense and TCL for alleged infringement of its patents covering HEVC, VP9, AV1 video compression and high‑dynamic‑range technologies. The filings were made in the Munich Local Division of the Unified Patent Court, the Munich Regional Court in Germany, the Rio de Janeiro State Court in Brazil, and the Delhi High Court in India, reflecting the global scope of the alleged infringement.

The patents at issue are part of InterDigital’s joint TV licensing program with Sony, a key source of the company’s licensing revenue. By initiating litigation, InterDigital signals its intent to enforce its intellectual property rights and protect the licensing income generated from this partnership.

InterDigital recently reported its Q4 2025 results, showing revenue of $158.23 million, down from $252.8 million in Q4 2024, largely due to a sharp decline in catch‑up revenue. Full‑year 2025 revenue was $834.02 million, a slight drop from $868.52 million in 2024, but the company posted record net income of $406.6 million and record non‑GAAP EPS of $15.31. Annualized recurring revenue grew 24% to $582.4 million, underscoring the strength of its licensing programs.

For Q1 2026, InterDigital guided revenue of $194 million to $200 million and diluted EPS of $1.61 to $1.86, exceeding the analyst consensus of $162.5 million. Full‑year 2026 revenue guidance is $675 million to $775 million, with non‑GAAP EPS of $8.74 to $11.84. Management highlighted accelerating momentum in licensing, deepening AI expertise, and portfolio growth as drivers of the positive outlook.

The lawsuit could increase legal expenses, but it also demonstrates InterDigital’s confidence in protecting its IP to secure licensing revenue. The company’s patent portfolio grew 14% in 2025 to approximately 38,000 granted patents and applications, and it recently acquired the video‑AI start‑up Deep Render. This action aligns with InterDigital’s strategy of using litigation to strengthen its licensing position in the consumer‑electronics market.

Josh Schmidt, Chief Legal Officer, said, "Hisense and TCL are both top‑five global TV manufacturers and have built their businesses on the back of research carried out by InterDigital engineers. Our decades of investment in foundational research have helped change how we watch our favorite movies and shows, and Hisense and TCL cannot be allowed to continue to infringe our IP, particularly while many of their competitors have taken a license." Liren Chen, President and CEO, added, "We finished the year with another strong quarter to cap an outstanding performance in 2025."
