CarMax launched a new app in the ChatGPT app store on February 27, 2026, making it the first U.S. auto retailer to offer a full car‑shopping and selling experience through a conversational AI platform. The app lets users search for vehicles, view listings, and receive vehicle‑value information directly within ChatGPT.

The launch builds on CarMax’s long‑standing investment in AI, including its virtual assistant “Skye,” and is part of a broader strategy to embed AI across its digital channels. Management expects the integration to drive at least $150 million in cost savings over the next 18 months and to expand the company’s reach to the 700 million weekly active users of ChatGPT.

CarMax’s inventory of more than 45,000 vehicles is now searchable through natural‑language queries, and the app also offers a quick‑offer feature that allows sellers to receive a valuation and an offer within the same conversational interface. The move is designed to simplify the buying journey and to capture customers who are already using AI for other tasks.

The announcement comes after a challenging Q3 FY2026, when CarMax reported net sales of $5.79 billion, down 6.9% year‑over‑year, and earnings per diluted share of $0.43, a decline from $0.81 in the prior quarter. The company cited weaker demand and falling used‑car prices as headwinds, and the AI initiative is seen as a strategic response to revitalize growth.

“By bringing CarMax’s nationwide inventory and shopping tools into ChatGPT, we’re giving customers a simple, reliable way to explore their options within a platform they are already using. This integration is another step in making the car‑shopping experience more seamless than ever before,” said Diane Cafritz, Chief Innovation & People Officer. Market reaction to the launch was positive, with analysts noting the first‑mover advantage and the potential to increase customer engagement.
