LanzaTech Global, Inc. (NASDAQ: LNZA) announced a contract with Spray Engineering Devices Ltd. (SED) to construct a next‑generation ethanol plant in Uttar Pradesh, India. The facility will process up to 300 tons of sugarcane bagasse per day, a non‑food agricultural residue, and will produce sustainable fuels, chemicals, and nutrient‑rich biochar for local farmers.

The plant will use LanzaTech’s proprietary gas‑fermentation platform to convert bagasse‑derived syngas into ethanol, a key building block for sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. The Smart Village initiative, under which the project falls, aims to harness low‑cost solar power and green hydrogen to convert agricultural residues into high‑value products.

This contract marks LanzaTech’s first commercial deployment in India and expands its footprint into a market with significant renewable‑fuel demand. The project is also one of the first private‑sector developments under India’s PM JI‑VAN Yojana program, which supports advanced bioethanol production from agricultural waste.

LanzaTech has faced financial challenges in recent quarters, reporting negative earnings per share and operating and net margins. The new contract could provide a new revenue stream, but the company’s overall financial health remains weak, with ongoing investment and operating losses.

Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, LanzaTech’s CEO, said the partnership with SED strengthens the company’s presence in India and demonstrates how farm waste can be used commercially to produce ethanol. She added that waste‑based feedstocks support Prime Minister Modi’s Make in India initiative.

While no immediate market reaction data is available, the contract underscores LanzaTech’s strategy to scale its technology in emerging markets and to contribute to India’s circular‑economy and decarbonization goals.
