Mondelez International inaugurated a new, state‑of‑the‑art Toblerone production line in Bern on March 11 2026, with Swiss President and Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin in attendance. The investment, totaling CHF 65 million, will establish a global Center of Excellence for the iconic Swiss chocolate brand.

The new line will increase Toblerone’s production capacity and enhance its innovation capabilities. 90 % of Toblerone production is already based in Bern, and the plant exports to more than 120 countries, making the facility a critical hub for the brand’s global supply chain.

The investment underscores Mondelez’s commitment to the Toblerone brand and its Swiss heritage, reinforcing the premium positioning that the company aims to lead by 2030. It also aligns with Mondelez’s broader strategy to navigate commodity cost headwinds, including the cocoa cost inflation that has pressured margins in recent quarters.

Swiss President Parmelin highlighted Toblerone’s cultural significance, stating: “If there is one product that represents Switzerland worldwide, it is chocolate. And Toblerone has a very special place among Swiss chocolates. It is more than just chocolate. It is a piece of Swiss history.” He added: “I am therefore particularly pleased that ~90 % of Toblerone production continues to be produced here in Bern on this new production line.”

While Mondelez reported a Q4 2025 earnings beat, the company has faced margin compression due to rising raw‑material costs. The new production line is intended to offset these headwinds by increasing scale, improving operational efficiency, and enabling faster product innovation.

The Center of Excellence will serve as a hub for research and development, allowing the company to accelerate new flavor launches and strengthen Toblerone’s competitive position against other premium chocolate brands.

The investment complements Mondelez’s ongoing capacity expansion, including a 2022 plan to launch a production line in Slovakia that would require changes to labeling. The Bern facility remains the flagship site, preserving the brand’s Swiss identity.

Overall, the inauguration marks a significant milestone for Mondelez, reinforcing its premium chocolate strategy and positioning the company to meet growing global demand while managing commodity cost pressures.
