Methanex Corporation, in partnership with Exolum and Ørsted, inaugurated the United Kingdom’s first commercially ready biomethanol bunkering service at the Port of Immingham on February 10, 2026. The facility combines Exolum’s existing storage infrastructure with Methanex’s supply of ISCC‑certified biomethanol, creating a dedicated low‑carbon fuel option for maritime vessels.

The biomethanol is produced at Methanex’s Gulf Coast plants from waste and residual biomass feedstocks, delivering up to an 80 % reduction in greenhouse‑gas emissions compared with conventional marine fuels. By leveraging Exolum’s storage capacity, the service can deliver the fuel directly to Ørsted’s North Sea offshore wind‑farm maintenance vessels, marking the first commercial use of biomethanol for low‑carbon marine operations in the UK.

This launch positions Methanex as a key player in the maritime decarbonization effort and expands its marine fuel portfolio into a market that is projected to reach several hundred thousand tonnes of demand by the end of 2025. The partnership demonstrates Methanex’s ability to integrate production, logistics, and shipping expertise to deliver end‑to‑end solutions for the shipping industry.

The initiative underscores Methanex’s commitment to supporting the transition to low‑carbon shipping, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s decarbonization agenda and the UK’s clean‑energy ambitions. By creating a new revenue stream and strengthening its competitive moat, Methanex is poised to capture a growing share of the low‑carbon marine fuel market.

"Methanex is proud to lead the way in providing sustainable marine fuels," said Stuart McCall, Vice President of Low‑Carbon Global Market Development. "This partnership with Exolum and Ørsted demonstrates our ability to deliver integrated solutions that accelerate decarbonization for the shipping sector."

"The biomethanol bunkering service aligns with our commitment to green energy and supports the broader decarbonisation of maritime operations," added Mika Bärlund, Lead Category Manager at Ørsted.
