Meta announced a new artificial‑intelligence content licensing agreement with News Corp, paying up to $50 million per year for a minimum of three years and granting access to the U.S. and U.K. news archives and fresh reporting for use in its AI models and user‑facing tools.

The deal expands Meta’s data moat by providing high‑quality, verified journalism that can be used to train and fine‑tune its foundation models and to improve the relevance of its AI assistants. It also allows Meta to pull in up‑to‑date news content for its AI products.

News Corp CEO Robert Thomson highlighted the deal during a Morgan Stanley conference on March 2, saying “We have one very public horizontal deal,” and noting the company is at “an advanced stage” in other negotiations and “you won't have too long to wait” for additional details. He also described the company’s “woo and sue” strategy, saying “We’ll woo you. We’d like you to be our partner. But if you’re stealing our stuff, we are going to sue you.”

The agreement follows News Corp’s earlier $250 million, five‑year deal with OpenAI, underscoring the growing importance of licensed journalism in the competitive AI landscape. Meta’s broader AI strategy includes investments in compute and model development and similar agreements with CNN, Fox News, People Inc., and USA Today.

Investors responded favorably to the announcement, while Meta’s shares slipped slightly, reflecting concerns about the company’s broader AI investment costs.
