Microsoft has added a 900‑megawatt AI factory campus to its existing data‑center footprint in Abilene, Texas, bringing the total capacity at the site to roughly 2.1 gigawatts. The new campus is built in partnership with Crusoe, the developer of the Abilene complex, and is designed to support large‑scale AI workloads that feed Microsoft’s Azure AI platform.

The expansion is part of Microsoft’s broader AI strategy, which has seen rapid growth in demand for services such as Copilot and Azure AI. The new capacity will allow Microsoft to meet the increasing compute needs of its AI partners, including OpenAI, and to accelerate the monetization of its AI‑driven revenue streams.

Microsoft’s Q2 2026 capital expenditures totaled $37.5 billion, with about $25 billion directed toward short‑term assets such as GPUs and CPUs for AI and cloud growth. In the same period, Azure revenue rose 39 percent, and Copilot seats reached 15 million. The company’s Intelligent Cloud segment grew 29 percent year‑over‑year to $32.9 billion in Q2 2025, underscoring the financial momentum behind the investment.

Noelle Walsh, President of Cloud Operations and Innovation at Microsoft, said, "As customer demand for AI continues to grow, Microsoft is focused on ensuring access to reliable and responsible infrastructure at scale. Crusoe's Abilene facility reflects the type of large‑scale infrastructure that supports next‑generation AI while contributing long‑term value to the local community."

Abilene is emerging as a key hub for AI infrastructure, with several hyperscalers expanding their presence there. The new campus will benefit from Crusoe’s on‑site power plant, which enhances grid resilience and supports sustainability goals. The expansion strengthens Microsoft’s competitive position in the AI market, where data‑center capacity and energy efficiency are critical differentiators.
