Microsoft has leased a 700‑megawatt data‑center project in Texas that was originally being built for Oracle and OpenAI. The facility, developed by Crusoe and located near Abilene adjacent to the Oracle‑OpenAI “Stargate” campus, will provide Microsoft with additional capacity for its Azure cloud services and AI workloads.

The lease is a key component of Microsoft’s $80 billion investment plan for AI‑optimized data centers through 2028. By securing this Texas site, Microsoft expands its footprint in a region that has become a hub for large‑scale, AI‑ready infrastructure, positioning the company to meet the growing demand for cloud and generative‑AI services.

Oracle and OpenAI withdrew from the project after financing talks stalled and their strategic priorities shifted. Microsoft stepped in to fill the gap, underscoring the competitive dynamics of securing high‑capacity data‑center sites in the United States.

The move also aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to leverage cost advantages as the data‑center building boom continues. CEO Satya Nadella has noted that an oversupply of capacity could drive prices down by 2027‑2028, and the Texas lease positions Microsoft to rent capacity at favorable rates in the future.

Crusoe’s design of the facility incorporates stranded natural gas and renewable energy sources, supporting Microsoft’s goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030 and reinforcing the company’s sustainability commitments.
