Microsoft’s Fairwater AI data center in Mt. Pleasant, Wisconsin, began operations on April 16, 2026, ahead of its original schedule. The 300‑acre campus is designed to reach 3.3 GW of power capacity by late 2027 and will host hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 GPUs, positioning it as the world’s most powerful AI data center.

The early activation of Fairwater underscores Microsoft’s aggressive AI infrastructure strategy, which includes an $80 billion commitment to AI‑optimized data centers through 2028. By bringing the facility online early, Microsoft gains a competitive edge in the race to deliver large‑language‑model training and inference services, supporting its Copilot and Azure OpenAI offerings.

Satya Nadella said on X that the data center “is going live, ahead of schedule. As the world’s most powerful AI datacenter, it will bring together hundreds of thousands of GB200s into a single seamless cluster. Congrats to all the teams who made this possible!” He added that the investment “is why we continue to increase our investments in AI across both capital and talent to meet the massive opportunity ahead.”

Microsoft’s cloud and AI business has seen strong growth, with Azure revenue surpassing $75 billion in FY25, up 34 percent, driven by demand across all workloads. The new data center is expected to support this momentum by providing the scale and speed required for next‑generation AI services.

Investors welcomed the announcement, viewing the early launch as evidence of Microsoft’s execution capability and its ability to secure supply chains amid industry‑wide shortages. The facility’s integration with the Atlanta campus will create a distributed AI superfactory, further enhancing Microsoft’s ability to deliver high‑performance AI solutions.

Microsoft also highlighted its sustainability focus, noting that Fairwater incorporates liquid‑cooling systems to reduce water usage and is designed to run on carbon‑free energy sources. The company’s commitment to renewable power and efficient cooling aligns with its broader environmental goals.
