President Donald Trump approved the development of up to 10 gigawatts of natural‑gas‑powered generation in Texas and Pennsylvania for NextEra Energy. The approval is part of the U.S.–Japan trade agreement, which includes Japan’s $550 billion investment commitment to the United States. Under the agreement, the projects will be jointly owned by U.S. and Japanese entities, with NextEra responsible for construction and operation.

The 10 GW of new gas capacity expands NextEra’s generation mix and is positioned to meet the growing electricity demand from data centers and other large‑scale customers. While natural gas emits less CO₂ than coal, it remains a fossil fuel; the company frames the projects as a lower‑carbon bridge to a cleaner energy future.

In its most recent quarterly report, NextEra reported adjusted earnings of $0.54 per share for Q4 2025, beating consensus estimates of $0.53 by $0.01. The company also reported revenue of $6.50 billion, slightly below the $6.78 billion forecast. The earnings beat was attributed to disciplined cost management and operational leverage, while the revenue miss reflected a modest shortfall in demand relative to expectations.

Analysts have responded positively to the approval. UBS raised its price target for NextEra to $104 from $91 and maintained a “Buy” rating, while Erste Group upgraded the company’s rating to “Buy” from “Hold.” The approval is seen as a key milestone in NextEra’s plan to deliver 15–30 GW of new U.S. generation capacity by 2035, primarily gas‑based, to serve AI and data‑center workloads.

John Ketchum, Chairman, President and CEO, said, “America needs more power, and NextEra Energy is ready to deliver. For more than a century, we have built the energy infrastructure that powers America’s growth. Our hub strategy is designed to scale quickly and support rising demand while strengthening America’s energy security—without increasing electricity costs for American households.” He added, “I’ll be disappointed if we don’t double our goal and deliver at least 30 GW through this channel.”
