NewHydrogen announced that it has finished a critical pre‑pilot technical validation of its ThermoLoop technology and has decided to build a dedicated engineering‑scale test unit. The validation, completed on April 21 2026, demonstrated that the system can operate at temperatures below 1,000 °C, run more than 10 cycles, and achieve a hydrogen production efficiency that exceeds 75 % of the theoretical yield.
The engineering test unit will be constructed by a team from the University of California, Santa Barbara, led by senior chemical engineer Ryan Patrick and directed by NewHydrogen’s CTO Dr. Eric McFarland, with lead investigator Dr. Phil Christopher. The unit’s purpose is to validate continuous, around‑the‑clock performance and to generate the design data needed for a commercial pilot plant.
CEO Steve Hill said, "We are thrilled to have completed the research phase of our development program and are now advancing into the engineering phase required for commercialization." He added, "To do so, ThermoLoop was required to pass 'Stage Gate One,' a very rigorous pre‑pilot plant test. Based on our internal review and published literature, we are not aware of any other heat‑based water‑splitting technology that has met this combination of performance and engineering criteria."
While the technical milestone is a positive step toward a potentially low‑cost hydrogen production method, NewHydrogen’s financial position remains precarious. The company reported no revenue in 2025, a net loss of $2.85 million, and an accumulated deficit of $180.79 million. An auditor’s report raised substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern, underscoring the need for future financing.
The announcement was met with a positive market reaction, reflecting investor optimism about the technology’s potential to deliver the world’s cheapest clean hydrogen. However, the reaction is tempered by the company’s significant financial risks and the absence of any current revenue stream.
